Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide – Finding the right one for your home

Like many other gadgets in a modern home, vacuum cleaning is an essential task. This appliance helps consumers keep their homes clean and also make clean up after pets and kids easy. There are a lot of things to consider before investing in one. Keep in mind that some may be heavy, others noisy and yet another might have fewer tools than one requires. There are so many choices on the market these days – how do you figure out which Vacuum cleaners are durable, cleans well and easy to use? Here are a few tips to make the buying process easier.

Important factors to consider

  • Bag model vs. Bagless models: If you are looking at an upright vacuum for your home, you should consider whether you want a vacuum with a bag or a canister. Bags can hold a lot of dirt but it can be hard to figure out when they should be replaced. The advantage is that bags trap more dirt; downside? You must keep buying replacement bags regularly. Bagless cleaners are becoming increasingly popular and the good thing is that it is easy to see when they get full. They are easy to clean and reuse – the only expense for a customer is the filter. These are expensive but don’t have to be replaced that often.
  • Filters: There are many filters which to be used. The most common is the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA filter). This filter removes harmful particulate matter from the air and makes it easier for people with allergies to breathe. Some of these filters can be cleaned with water and reused for a specified number of times, before they have to be replaced. Do your homework before investing in one.
  • Commercial strength or residential: Vacuums are made to tackle all kinds of jobs – for people who are highly sensitive to allergens like mold, commercial cleaners may be the way to go. There are also a number of good residential vacuum cleaners with filters etc. which clean quite well.

Types of Upright Cleaners
  • Stick Vacuums: These are almost the same as most uprights but have very few accessories or attachments. A streamlined design makes it easier to use and can be used mostly on hard floors. They are not as powerful and some can even be operated using batteries. These are mostly good for handling light amounts of dirt.
  • Convertible vacuums: Some manufacturers offer ones which can be converted from stick to handheld models so that they can be used to clean tight areas and even cars. These are a great value as you get two vacuums for the price of one.
  • Canister Vacuums: These are easy to use in tight spaces and even for carrying around. Many consumers prefer canisters as they can be used easily on carpet as well as bare floors. Some canister vacs are also good for cleaning up wet spills. Check around for the best available cleaner.
All in all, the process of finding the right cleaner can seem an uphill task. Prices can also influence buying. Consider your lifestyle and buy one which will last a long time.
